Records Shattered

The Bowlathon Was a Huge Success!

By: Russ Otten

An amazing night of God's blessings! That best describes Friday, November 20, the date of the 16th annual Right-to-Life Bowlathon. It was a smashing success with many inspirational stories.

Over $3,600 was raised, eclipsing the $3,500 goal, and catapulting last year's record of $3,200. In addition, over 40 bowlers participated, another event record.

For the second straight year, homeschoolers won the Cup of Life Trophy, raising a school record of $1,854. Lutheran High donated an incredible $1,011.

Though the amount raised is wonderful, how the students gathered the funds is remarkable. Here are just two of those stories.

Sarah and Christa Gulke and friend Laura DeTroye approached and were given permission by Jay Mentink, owner of the Piggly Wiggly in Oostburg, to set up a table display to raise money for the Pro-Life event. Two hours later, they had gathered over $400. Jay was only too happy to see young teens actively involved in this worthy cause. And the girls were thrilled.

Mary Berg, senior at Lutheran High, led a spirited effort to claim the Cup of Life Trophy. Included was a "Jeans Day" that brought in more than $400. Because jeans are not part of the dress code, special days allow students to wear jeans for $3, with all proceeds going to a charity or ministry. The latest "Jeans Day" money was designated for the Bowlathon and part of Lutheran High's push to win. Though a bit disappointed, Mary was excited that their work brought in over $1,000.

Monies raised are used for the LifeLight newsletter, Rally for Life, community billboards, and other events and services that promote Pro-Life.

At a time when the economy is at its weakest in decades, God's people showed tremendous strength of character and conviction. What a blessing!
